Evan Johnson Anthology Disc Two

Disc two features 8 keyboard based instrumentals, 3 guitar based instrumentals, and various takes and versions of 16 songs with lyrics.

1. Someday (I Didn't Really Know) (take 3)
This version adds a long instrumental middle section but cuts the section about "Home".
2. Someday (I Didn't Really Know) (take 4)
This version adds vocal harmonies, includes the sections about "home", but doesn't have the long instrumental part.
3. Someday (I Didn't Really Know) (take 5)
This version starts with the "na na na" section, includes some of the vocal harmonies, includes a very effective variation on the "home" section, as well as a somewhat more restrained take on the original "home" section. It does not include the long instrumental part.
4. Magnetic Blues (keyboard instrumental 21)
A flute melody floats above this lightly driving, harmonically simple piece with a drum machine.
5. I Don't Cotton (keyboard instrumental 22) (w/wordless vocal overdub)
Complex, dark chords, dramatic pauses, and a climactic high note to the vocal.
6. Light From The Tower (keyboard instrumental 23)
7. Pardon My Silence
Simple lyrics start this love song, which becomes effectively wordless in the B section.
8. The Central Intelligence Urgency (keyboard instrumental 22) (w/wordless vocal overdub)
9. Another Lover (new version of track 8 with some mumbled lyrics at the beginning)
10. Long Day (take 1)
A constant beep is surprisingly effective in this melancholy meditation on time itself.
11. Long Day (take 2)
The key is changed. The beep is altered slightly and sounds like it is sort of grinding. An extra verse speaks of the night as well as the day. An ideal version would include the original beep and the extra verse.
12. No Book Learnin' (guitar instrumental 5)
Two guitars plays rhythm and lead, while the keyboard is present primarily in drum machine form.
13. Pretty Darling, Please Don't Cry
Leaving is difficult, says this song with a descending bassline and a guitar solo.
14. Where Would You Be Now?
Medeival trumpets, booming, ominous bass. Whispered vocals. Commands your attention.
15. Nothin' Like You (take 1)
Delayed guitar chords support a vocal about being particularly impresssed with a person.
16. I Love Her
There is a certain darkness to what seems at first to be a simple love song. Perhaps the singer is trying to convince himself.
17. Since You're Gone (take 1)
18. Since You're Gone (take 2)
A more developed and enjoyable version with new lyrics.
19. Bring the Camera
The promising lyrics turn into mumbling.
20. Turn Out The Lights
A harmony vocal helps this song, which bears an ever so slight resemblance at times to "Rainy Days & Mondays".
21. A Christmas Thought
Original poignant lyrics about the true meaning of Christmas. Strange rhythm.
22. Running on the Beach (keyboard instrumental 23)
23. In Boxes (guitar instrumental 5)
24. (seven second count in for following track)
25. In the Wild (keyboard instrumental 24)
26. The Little Drummer Boy (take 1) (keyboard instrumental) (cover song)
A dramatically re-harmonized version of the Christmas classic.
27. The Little Drummer Boy (take 1) (keyboard instrumental) (cover song)
A solo flute verse starts this version, which also features heavier, somewhat less interesting percussion choices.
28. Orlando Vice (take 1) (keyboard instrumental 25)
29. Orlando Vice (take 2) (keyboard instrumental 25)
A better more complete take on this enjoyable potential television theme song.
30. Vs. The Man (keyboard instrumental 26)
31. Wait!
Multi-layered acoustic guitar lines and yodeling contribute to this meditation on aloneness versus the need for others.
32. Christmas 1963 (take 1 - incomplete, extremely short) (keyboard instrumental 27)
33. Christmas 1963 (take 2) (keyboard instrumental 27)
This song will be familiar to fans of "How Could I Know" where a new guitar part was overdubbed using the classical nylon string available at Memphis Studios.
34. Hello!
This semi-comedic piece features effective use of all five elements of the "Evan Sound" - drum machine, guitar, vocals, keyboard, and effects.
35. Where Are We Going? (guitar instrumental 6)
This poignant piece combines guitar and keyboard in a way reminiscient of Christmas 1963
36. Rising (guitar instrumental 7)
37. I Must Be Dreamin'
A more developed vocal version of track 36 with a very Bob Dylan like semi-spoken vocal delivery.
38. Winter in the Tropics (take 1) (keyboard instrumental 28)
39. Winter in the Tropics (take 2) (keyboard instrumental 28)
Some vocal effects and birdish whistling make the tropical connection even more pronounced than it was when I first titled the song just now.
40. He's Not My Brother (take 1) (incomplete - cuts off abruptly)
An effective harmony vocal contributes to this song about walking by a begging person.
